The good word seems everywhere, but good words only – Jimmy Eat World, Heart is Hard to Find
Since I’ve started this journey to grace, I’ve found it very interesting how easy it is to find Scripture…anywhere. What’s even more interesting, however, is that despite the presence of Scripture and the references to God, no one actually ends up listening to it. It’s as if everyone wants to feel like they are being a good Christian, but they don’t actually want to put forth the effort to do so.
I propose we make a change. From this point forward, with every reference to Scripture and God I see, I’m going to sit back and reflect on exactly what that message is. Questions I plan on asking myself:
- Do I actively practice this lesson?
- Is there something I could be doing to better adhere to it?
- How should my life be impacted based on this word from God?
I encourage you all to do the same thing. Let’s stop making ourselves feel good just by reciting some random piece of Scripture we’ve memorized. Let’s make it our priority to feel good because we’re acting on what we’ve learned.
This brings up an important question: why should we even bother listening to God? Well, according to the Bible we should listen because:
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joins and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12
In a way, it sounds a lot like if you listen to God you’ll find the answers. Maybe they won’t be laid out as simple as we’d like, but they are there. God doesn’t want to make things easy for us, because it not only wouldn’t be interesting, but then we wouldn’t be able to make that same connection with Him. Have you ever searched for an answer with God and then found it? How amazing of a feeling is that? That is what brings us closer to Him, and why we must question what He teaches us.
Life is about learning. It’s about interpretation. Let’s start living like it is and stop walking through this world as a zombie. Learn to question things, especially Scripture. You’ll create a better connection with God because of it. Trust me, in the week I’ve been writing this blog my relationship with Him as already grown leaps and bounds.
